ImageGuildford Samaritans provide a unique and invaluable service to our local community.  24 hours a day, 365 days a year trained volunteers are available to befriend the suicidal and those who are depressed, lonely or in despair.  Although we live in an ever more complicated and demanding world it seems that people's personal problems remain largely the same - broken relationships, marriage failure, depression, financial and other anxieties, a sense of failure and frustration.

These can all lead to suicidal thoughts and acts.  The Samaritans aim to help alleviate these feelings and last year we responded to over 20,000 callers either on the telephone, by email or in person.  We hope and believe we were able to help at least some of these through their crises.

We need over £30,000 per annum to run the Centre in Woodbridge Road and there is very little by way of regular funding.  As a result the 'Friends of Guildford Samaritans' (FOGS) seek financial contributions in many ways (see 'How to Help the Samaritans')

Additional demands on funds are always being made.  In particular, the Branch has been extremely short of volunteers and this has necessitated a promotional campaign including quite expensive newspaper advertising.  Fortunately this is proving successful but must be continued if the Branch is to keep volunteers at a sustainable level.
